What is biomechanics?

Biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of a living body, especially of the forces exerted by muscles and gravity on the skeletal structure. Podiatrists analyse how muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments work together to produce movement. Your feet are your foundation and can often be overlooked.

During your biomechanical assessment, we assess you from head to toe. Your podiatrist will examine you sitting, standing and walking, checking the major joint complexes of the foot, ankle, knee and hip, as well as assessing your muscles, tendons and ligaments. They will look at your footwear and even your socks.

At First For Footcare we use some of the latest in shoe technology to assess your walking gait from inside your own footwear. Our tech insoles from Podosmart, tell us what your foot is doing inside the shoe as you move through the gait cycle- from where you make contact with the ground, to the position you push off from. This gives our podiatrists so much more data to help us work through your issue. We also use imaging to monitor your gait and posture outside the shoe, assessing your whole body movement.

If you require functional foot orthoses we have over twenty options of off-the-shelf or customised devices ranging from basic simple insoles to fully customised 3D printed foot orthoses.
